Volunteer Program
Thank you so much for volunteering for this fun event! As usual you are the heart and soul of many of our operations! Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra is coordinating the volunteers for this event. Please contact Maggie Palchak for more information or scheduling questions.This year, Alta One is generously sponsoring the volunteer program. They will be providing goodie bags to each volunteer. Volunteers will also receive a T-shirt and a BBQ ticket for the Sunday evening Award Ceremony. Additional support for volunteers is generously donated by Brew Thru (coffee) and by VONS (food).
There is a mandatory Volunteer Meeting Tuesday, August 26th from 6:00pm-7:00pm in Suite Z (located above Elegant Bath in the VONS Plaza). Volunteer waivers (mandatory), T-shirts, goodie bags and event information will be distributed at this meeting. There is also a check-in/registration meeting Tuesday August 26th from 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm. If you are working a check-in/registration shift you will need to attend this meeting as well. If you are not able to attend these meetings, you may check-in at Whiskey Creek Registration area during the registration times listed below.
Volunteer Positions are briefly described below. Please come prepared to be very busy at times with periods of lulls in between. It is the nature of the event that business will come in surges. We appreciate both your hard work and your patience.
Volunteer Positions
Registration Area:
Location: Whiskey Creek Parking Lot (Corner of Main Street & Minaret Road)
Hours of Operation:
Volunteers Needed: 2 volunteers scheduled for all hours. Shifts are approximately 5 hours.
Job Description: Assist with set-up and break-down of registration area, answer questions and assist anglers with filling out registration forms. Keep volunteer food area clean and organized. This is a very mellow volunteer area with a surge of pre-registered and unregistered anglers Thursday evening, Friday evening and early Friday morning. Volunteers should familiarize themselves with the official registration form. There will be a town staff member running each cash register. Shannon Freeman will head up the town staff.

Trout Check-in:
Location: Pokonobe Resort on Lake Mary in the Mammoth Lakes Basin
Hours of Operation:
Volunteers Needed: 2 volunteers covering the entire time. Shifts are approximately 4 hours.
Job Description: Check-in tagged fish as anglers bring them in and verify with Registration Manager Kelli Cummins. The volunteers here should be invited to the check-in/registration meeting held prior to the regular volunteer meeting. The table can be outside on the deck or inside the resort. It might be a bit slow here but these volunteers will be ambassadors to the event answering questions and spreading awareness of TROUTSTOCK.
Parking Attendant:
Location: The back side of Lake Mary from Lake Mary Marina to the Lake George turn off.
Hours of Operation:
Volunteers Needed: 2 roving during operating hours. Shifts are approximately 4 hours.
Job Description: Rove the back side of Lake Mary and ensure that cars are parked legally. All four tires must be off of the road. Only customers can park at Lake Mary Marina .... not all day anglers. People also sometimes block the horse crossing at the Lake George turn-off. We are here to support forest service efforts. They will also be patrolling 6:00am - 10:00am.
Kids Fishing Pond:
Location: The Village at Mammoth, The Pond
Volunteers Needed: 5 for the duration of hours listed. Shifts will be approximately 4 hours.
Job Description: Assist with distribution of rods, help to string line and hooks. This will be a very busy area, kids may need to be organized in a line or helped to distribute evenly around the fishing pond.
Fishing pro staff will be available to help kids to cast into the pond and catch fish.
We would like to get an idea of how many kids use this area so please try to keep a running count. We will also have sign up sheets available here for those who wish to receive more information on fishing in and around Mammoth Lakes.
Cooking & Other Demonstrations/Talks:
Hours of Operation:
Volunteers Needed: 1 for the duration of time. Shift is approximately 4 hours.
Job Description: Keep the cooking demo station neat and tidy…assist chefs with distributing samples of fish and wine. There will also be fish cleaning and fly tying demos mixed in with the cooking and a few casual speakers.
Kids T-Shirt Painting & Contest:
Location: The Village at Mammoth, Labor Day Arts and Crafts Festival, Convict Lake?
Hours of Operation:
Job Description: You are a source of information for this event. You will also be ambassadors for DSES. Help kids with T-shirt painting contest. Ensure supplies are stocked and tidy. Direct folks to event sites (there will be a trolley running from the Labor Day Festival site to the Village).
Awards Ceremony:
Location: The Village at Mammoth Plaza Area
Hours of Operation:
Volunteers Needed: 6 Volunteers. Shift is approximately 4 hours.
Job Description: The awards ceremony is the grand finale of the event. Initially volunteers can expect to help with set-up; moving boxes, tables and tablecloths; helping to sort out prizes; answering questions, etc. The awards ceremony itself will take place from 6:00pm - 7:00pm.
Kidstock Casting Competition:
Location: The Village at Mammoth Plaza Area
Hours of Operation:
Volunteers needed: 2 for the duration. Shit is approximately 5 hours.
Job Description: The main role for volunteers is to sign kids up for the casting competition and check-in kids who are already signed up. This year as we are opening up the contest to all kids 15 and under. The event is scheduled to take place 12:00pm - 2:00pm.
Horseshoe Lake Demonstration Area:
Location: Horseshoe Lake/Mammoth Lakes Basin
Hours of Operation:
Volunteers Needed: 2 for the duration. Shifts are approximately 4 hours. There will be other staff present from The Troutfitter and Mammoth Kayaks. (We are still waiting for approval from U.S.F.S. on this event)
Job Description: Volunteers main responsibility is to greet kids coming for the demos. All kids participating in the demos will be eligible to compete in the Kidstock Casting Competition.
Set-up and breakdown:
Location: Whiskey Creek Parking Lot and The Village at Mammoth
Hours of Operation:
Volunteers Needed: 2 for the duration. Shifts are approximately 5 hours.
Job Description: Volunteers will assist TROUTSTOCK logistics crew to set-up banners, tables, chairs, barricades, pop-up tents and other event items. If you are interested in doing some light physical work this is a fun group to work with
Kids Fishing Games:
Local fundraising groups (ie; cheerleaders, soccer team, football team) will host and staff events such as fish races, face painting, cotton candy booth etc.
Convict Creek AND Mammoth Lakes Basin Clean-up:
As part of the event, Mammoth Middle/High School Fly Fishing Associations are leading a clean-up of the Mammoth Lakes Basin on Saturday, August 30, 2008 in partnership with the Southwest Council of the Federation of Flyfishers (SWCFFF) and The United States Forest Service.
During the clean-up SWCFFF will be installing mono tubes (recycling stations for monofilament fishing line) near marinas and lodging properties that are interested in supporting the program. The Tubes are made from 4" black abs plastic 30" long with a 90 degree elbow glued to the top, and a female adaptor glued to the bottom; with a threaded plug screwed into it. A hole will be drilled in the plug to allow any water to escape. The tubes are then bolted to an EXISTING POST with the correct means necessary to the particular application.
