Sara Chavez Writes About Her DSES Experience

I have recently moved to Mammoth Lakes and started working as a physical therapist at Mammoth S.P.O.R.T. Clinic. I had the opportunity to ride with the support crew for Terry Smutney on the High Sierra Fall Century. We spent about 12 1/2 hours on our bikes as Terry made his way through the tough Sierra terrain on his hand cycle. My fiancé, Steve Morra OT, and I were commissioned to help Terry with transfers on and off his bike during the ride, reminding him to stay hydrated and nourished, and acting as his assisted device to navigate the rest stops.

I wanted to express my gratitude for the opportunity to ride with Terry and help his team along the way. It was a very organized and well planned ride thanks to Robin Conners. Anita Haenni rode her mountain bike (not an easy task) to help us with transfers and food runs for Terry. Our SAG driver, Susie, did a phenomenal job staying within reach and in contact at all times. Go Team!

Although it was a very exhausting day I am so proud of Terry for pedaling over 70 miles this year and feel honored to be a part of his challenge. I can not think of a more rewarding experience I have had as a PT in or outside the clinic. Adaptive sports are an integral part of disabled athlete's lives and DSES provides infinite opportunities for athletes in this area thanks to the dedicated support from its staff and volunteers. I am proud to be a new volunteer. I look forward to 100 miles next year and many more rewarding experiences to come. Thank you Terry.

Fondly,
Sara Chavez, PT
