DID YOU KNOW...

The word ski originates from the Old Norse word for "stick of wood"

Snowboarding originated with the snurfer (snow and surfer) Created in 1965, it was originally made by fastening two skis together and using a rope tied to the front for control.

The first ski lift was in Vermont.  Built in 1934, it was a rope tow powered by a Model T Ford engine.

Ullr is the Norse God of Winter.  Many people make offering in hopes of big powder dumps.

Billy Kidd won the first American medal in Olympic skiing at the 1964 games in Innsbruck

Summer Program Success Stories

Summer is all about fun here at DSES!  From kayaking to rock climbing to biking in the beautiful mountains, we do it all!  This summer was another summer of 'firsts' and huge successes.   Disabled Sports hosted its largest Wounded Warrior event to date - it was twice as big as last summer's camping event!  Forty wounded servicemen and women and their families gathered at McGee Creek from all over the country for a fabulous week of outdoor activities and adventures.   It was still snowing then, but we didn't let a little weather stop us!  Bethany, an Army medic that has joined us for other events, was thrilled to ride a bike without pain for the first time since her injury.  Families enjoyed their first camping trips together and were able to relax and enjoy without the stresses of hospital visits and endless appointments. The week was a huge success!

DSES also hosted its largest Pedal/Paddle event ever!  This annual event of cycling & kayaking has grown from a single family campout to an event almost as large as our Wounded Warrior campout!  Many kids and adults had the opportunity to kayak on Convict Lake, cycle on the beautiful trails at Shady Rest Park and in the evening enjoy a campfire talk by Friends of the Inyo.  Johnny & Sean, frequent participants, were able to cycle for the first time without the aid of training wheels!    In fact, we had to keep the two of them from riding off into the sunset as they were so eager to try out their new-found skills!

Even as we wrapped up the summer, and geared up for winter, our weekly Bishop Cycling Group rode every Wednesday through October.  These group rides were a great way for people to get out and improve skills, get in a workout with some friends, and stretch out the summer fun!  If you have only participated with Disabled Sports in the winter, come check us out in the summer - there are year round opportunities for everyone to have lots of fun!

Our Vision

We believe the freedom and exhilaration of outdoor challenges changes lives. No one should be left behind simply because of a disability!

Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra is a volunteer-based nonprofit dedicated to changing the lives of

children and adults with disabilities and their families.

Thank you to all of our donors, volunteers and students for making

this organization a success!
