Sierra Cycle Challenge Crew
On August 13th five cyclists pedaled from Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra at the Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge and headed for Grant Lake on the first leg of the inaugural Sierra Cycle Challenge. Riders included DSES Intern, Kari Shoemake, EL and Pat Smoogen, Ken Klein, and Terry Smutney on a Quickie hand-cycle.
The 30 mile ride included riding up Deadman's Summit and also had many thrilling descents. The crew arrived in time for lunch and spent an afternoon leisurely fishing and kayaking on Grant Lake.
The second day was a real challenge, all riders stopped at Base Camp Cafe for a well deserved lunch before the last leg up to Mammoth Mountain. The riders completed both days of the ride totaling over 66 miles.
This year's ride was a "test run" for a summer fundraiser for DSES and judging from the smiles on the faces of those who completed the challenge, it was very successful.
DSES and the riders would like to acknowledge special thanks and appreciation to those who contributed generously to the ride. Donors included Doug Smith and the crew at Grant Lake Resort, Vons Grocery, Schat's Bakery, Eastside Velo, Skip Harvey and the staff at Base Camp Cafe and the SAG support crew of Anita Haenni, Susie Klein and Kevin Thomas.
