All Smiles For The Fall High Sierra Century

Terry Smutney still smiling after 70 miles
The High Sierra Fall Century on September 9th has come and gone, but the memory of this awesome ride still sticks in my mind. The Eastern Sierra is a road bikers’ mecca. I had never road cycled before I moved here over a year ago. I bought a cycle and made myself a goal of riding my first century.

The Fall Century is 100 miles with approximately 6,000foot of elevation gain. Hundreds of riders come from all over the nation to participate in the ride and take in the spectacular surrounding scenery. The route consists of 4 major passes with many miles of climbing, but with the entire uphill gained, you must come down! This is the special treat of the ride, along with the rest stops that contained lots of food, smiling faces and sometimes dance music!
I trained all summer, riding parts of the century route and down in the Round Valley area where I live. With a huge smile on my face and wonderful feeling of accomplishment, I finished the century in just under 7 hours. There were many other riders who participated in the century and most acquiring pledges for DSES.
Special acknowledgement goes to Terry Smutney whose goal was to finish 70 miles. Terry finished the 70 miles in 12.5 hours with the help of riders; Robin Conners, Sara Chavez, Steve Morra, Anita Haenni and Susie Klein in the support vehicle. Great Job Terry!!
We thank everyone for your donations, sponsorship, pledges and continuing dedication to the program.
