Volunteer of the Year 2007
Terry Smutney

We're thrilled to announce this year's Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra Volunteer of the Year, Terry Smutney!
Terry has become an incredible asset to our program! We just can't imagine the program without him! Terry first came to Disabled Sports with the goal of learning how to mono ski. He returned from the first Gulf War with serious injuries, was dealing with severe pain, and he was on many medications. Not surprisingly, he didn't have a big smile on his face.
Now, none of us can imagine that person. Terry's guts and determination have inspired us all. He has become an amazing mono skier passing his PSIA Level 1 mono ski certification this past season and he is an outstanding hand cyclist too!
Today Terry motivates others to achieve amazing athletic feats. He assists with winter and summer lessons, fixes our adaptive equipment, invents new equipment and is ready for any task he is given. His commitment to the Disabled Sports Wounded Warrior Projects truly shows Terry's abilities.
The Rotary Club is another of Terry's volunteer commitments as well as his work educating local businesses about accessibility throughout the town of Mammoth Lakes. Terry hopes to head into the back country in his wheelchair soon and is coaching the Forest Service on assessable needs on trails. He encourages the use of the new Convict Lake accessible fishing pier and the new Rotary sponsored accessible restrooms.
This is just the beginning of what Terry does for Disabled Sports and the whole community. Thank you Terry for all that you do to help us make this the best program ever!
