Teen Volunteer Program

Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra welcomes students ages 13-17 to participate in the Teen Volunteer Program (TVP)! This program teams up a teen volunteer with an experienced adult volunteer who will teach the teen to prepare our students with disabilities for their lesson by getting adaptive equipment ready and assisting with lessons as well as other duties that aid DSES.

Volunteerism
At Its Best

by Rick Wood

Think about it. It's not just little League and AYSO coaches. It is also firefighters, hospital and Cast Off workers, library workers, educators from elementary school through college, to name just a few. Do you know anyone who doesn't volunteer for something?

Volunteers

Thank you for your interest in joining our team.

Do you know how important you are to the success of our operation?

Volunteers are the meat and bones of our program. They make things happen with our students and in the background.

They are the people who make us successful. Volunteers are the heart and soul of this wonderful program. Your time and energy is our most valuable asset!

We welcome your participation and eagerly look forward to a fun filled time, teaching people with disabilities to ski and snowboard in winter or learning new skills on summer adventures!

We are always looking for volunteers for our, not-for-profit organization. Skiers, snowboarders, fishermen, kayakers, climbers, outdoors-people, handy-people...anyone willing to work (and have fun!) We welcome all big-hearted people!

Please check the links at the upper left for additional information.

Please read the following qualifications, complete the application, and return it ASAP.

  Qualifications

  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old
  • For the Winter Program
    • Skiing volunteers should be intermediate to advanced skiers. "Intermediate"; means skiing parallel turns on typical "blue" runs. Snowboarding volunteers are welcome as long as they can also ski up to this level.
    • Volunteers receive a complimentary lift ticket for use on the day they teach and a transferable, complimentary ticket for every 6 hours worked.
    • Volunteers will receive on-snow training clinics during the season and when qualified will be encouraged to become a certified adaptive instructor.
  • For the Summer Program
    • Volunteers should have a general knowledge of summer outdoor activities. Skills including camping, hiking, rock climbing, boating-fishing, kayaking, nature, etc. will be helpful. Some training will be provided.
  • For General Help Year-Round
    • General Help volunteers should have handyman, fix-it type skills or office skills and be ready to work! We will consider anyone with special skills.
  • Volunteer hours can be counted as community service hours.

  Diary of a DSES Volunteer

It was near the end of March and my love for skiing had been denied for too long. With a window of time available, I loaded my Subaru and drove the 5 hours to Mammoth Mountain. Just as I turned off the highway it began to snow and I had an adrenaline high.

To the Volunteers of DSES by Dave Owings

We all do things for other people, and working with the disabled community makes us nice people. But to actually be a better human being, means that you bring some element of the human spirit that is not often seen or heard of. Giving your own free time to something and watching it grow and develop means you give up one of the most important things you own; your time.
